History & History
Arlington history: Arlington was amed in honor of Robert E. Lee's hometown, Arlington, in Virginia. The first settlement here was about 1840 at the site of a Texas Ranger post which was later called Johnson Station. The city was first founded as Hayterville.
Once the Texas and Pacific Railway decided to lay track through the area, Arlington was their choice. A town was developed and businesses began to move here. By July of 1876, the first train came through the now named town of Arlington. It was a typical western town with saloons, gambling and false-front buildings. When a well was dug downtown, mineral water was found rather than clear water. A fountain was built there and became the gathering place in town. Arlington College was begun in 1895. It grew from a two-year college until in 1965, it became part of the University of Texas education system.
